Time and extensive use can lead to reduced performance but there are various indications that a transmission needs repair or replacement.

For manual transmission forklifts, if the gear does not shift or is very “sticky”, the transmission most likely has issues. Common causes are low levels of transmission fluids, shift cable, weak clutch linkage, or using the wrong transmission fluid.

If there is a burning smell or smoke puffing from the transmission, the transmission is either overheating or transmission fluid is deficient, leaking or is dirty and requires changing. If the forklift is making extensive noise while in neutral, the components of the transmission may need replacement as the mechanical parts may be worn down.
